If you have not already seen Dunkirk then; firstly what have you been doing these last couple weeks? Secondly, go to the cinema right now, do not pass go and do not collect £200! Thirdly, stop reading now there will be spoilers for this film.

I have to hand it to the director and writer of this film, Christopher Nolan; he really managed to get the emotions across.

There was very little dialogue, which I thought was a great way to show how devastating the situation was. There really are no words to express what the soldiers and the civilians must have been going through at the time.

The actors did an amazing job in showing the fear that their characters must have been going through. The confusing thoughts as to how best to survive the situation and the inner battles of morality, the actors really had to work at showing the fear, pain and shock at the situation through their actions and body language.

Aneurin Barnard (Gibson/ French solider) had about two lines in the whole film, but his face was so expressive you could see the fear in his eyes. A prime example of this would be the scene when the soldiers are hiding in the boat and they are trying to kick him off as they think he is a German spy because he never talks. The fear in his eyes as he’s being told to leave at gunpoint, when all wants is to survive. The emotion in that scene was palpable, in that you fear for him, you are willing him to live and find a way out of that situation.

This film is full of great examples of emotion and amazing acting, but the one constant in throughout is the sound of the ticking clock this this re-enforced the sense of impending doom, as German air crafts rained bombs and bullets on the beach.

Despite portraying the greatest defeat in British military history, the film ends with the feeling of hope and eventual victory.

Overall I found Dunkirk hard hitting and emotionally charged as the director intended.
